News and Information
All Torque’ the club magazine
The club magazine is great. It’s totally portable and doesn’t require batteries or a wifi signal, so you can read it anywhere. It’s also worth remembering that the Editor is always on the look out for your good and interesting Porsche related stories with photo’s. It may be a road trip, Porsche rebuild, or a club event. If you have a story to share, send it over to Tony – details are in the magazine.
Drives Out When we plan a route, we do it on the computer software called Garmin Base Camp. The routes are sent out by email a few days in advance of a drive for you to download onto your own navigation device. The GPX file we produce can be imported into Garmin SatNav devices and into the free Porsche Roads App in addition to other navigation Apps and devices. We can also provide a KML file to use in Google Earth and some other devices, should you need KML. The purpose of our drives out, is to allow us all to enjoy driving our Porsches. Sometimes we are able to stay in a convoy, which can be an impressive sight, but quite often this is just not possible or desirable. We all know our planned destination, and there is absolutely no expectation for drivers to follow the suggested route or to arrive by a particular time.
The free Porsche Roads App is currently only compatible with iPhones. The ability of the App to allow users to import GPX files, and follow routes on a turn by turn basis, was discovered by club member Paul Peard. We are hopeful that this App will be further developed to cover android systems. However if you are an android phone user and you know of any FREE Apps, into which GPX files can be imported AND allow turn by turn navigation, please contact us so that we can share the information with fellow members.
Longer Drives Out
We aim to have one drive out event every quarter which is a little bit longer. Usually it’ll be a full day, occasionally it’ll be two days. Sign up via a Doodle Poll will be required to enable us to manage numbers. For all of these drives you will need to plan ahead and arrive prepared. Maps, SatNav, phones, coins, refreshments, etc etc. Dates, times and routes will be published, but any bookings for accommodation, or Channel Crossings will need to be made by you. It’s unreasonable to think that we’ll all be able to stick together and there is no pressure to do so. Plan for getting lost beforehand, then it won’t ruin your day if it happens. The aim is for you to enjoy your Porsche and to return home with a story to tell and share.
